The bible shares about neighbours in Galatians 5:14 “For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’“ This is our key verse for today.

I believe a lot of us may be familiar with “love your neighbor as yourself”. But sometimes, do we think about “loving ourselves first?” Our nature is to always look out for ourselves! Let’s look to the Lord as He’s really saying “See how well you can treat yourself? Treat your neighbour with that same care.” With that being said,  this morning I encourage all of us to Choose to Love, loving our neighbours as ourselves.

Big Idea: Choose to Love

Who are our neighbours?

Our key verse here is cited from Galatians, this very commonly heard verse in fact has its origins from way back in the Old Testament, Leviticus 19:18.

“You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord”.

Right away, what comes to your mind when you hear the word neighbour? Who do you see as your neighbour? The word neighbour in the bible is translated as such. Rea (as used in Leviticus) in Hebrew and Plesion (as used in Galatians) in Greek. Your neighbour can be as close as a family member, friend, brother, fellow countryman, someone whom you know.

In the Parable of the Good Samaritan, a Samaritan man took pity and helped a wounded Jew who crossed his path. The Samaritan was considered a neighbor to this Jew who crossed his path with needs he attended to. Moreover, Jews do not like the Samaritans. We are also called to love people that we don’t like too.

In fact, in this same passage, when Jesus answered the Jewish Lawyer’s question as to “And who is my neighbour” in Luke 10:29, His view are the Israelites.

Jesus says that our neighbour are people in need. Our neighbours are those around us, people whom we come into contact with. We need to choose to love.

It was also mentioned in :

Luke 6:33 “And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same.” It’s easy to do good to those who are easy to love, isn’t it? “

Yet to love our neighbour we have to choose to love.

What stop us from loving our neighbours?

1)     Our Time and Our Comfort.

2)     Fear of rejection

Do we make time for our neighbours? No, because they are not our priority.

Apart from this, we sometimes prioritize our own comfort.  Is loving our neighbour troublesome? Yes, to some extent it is. But still, we need to choose to love, and we must be willing to make time for our neighbours, and to step out of our comfort zones.

Our fear of rejection also gets in the way of choosing to love. We are worried about what people think of us.

What is love?

In our key verse in Galatians, “Love” has its root in agapaó, and it is considered the highest degree of love! This agape love refers to the unconditional divine love from God, which is given to us. This love cannot be defined apart from God! His love is demonstrated this way,

But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us, Romans 5:8.

C. S. Lewis identified 4 types of love from the Bible: Agape (Divine), Storge

(Affection/Sometimes defined as parental), Phileo (Friendship), Eros (Romantic). Out oft hese 4, the last 3 have no point of reference without the first–agape. Godly love should be found in all the other ways we show love, and we are expected to show this same love to our neighbours. Even in the context of “love your enemies”, the word ‘Agape’ is also used. This means that even when it’s hard to do so, we need God and the Holy Spirit to empower us.

By choosing love, we are obeying God’s commandment and is fulfilling God’s law.

How can we truly love the “neighbours” we encounter in our daily lives ?

Firstly, it’s not about you. We have to make a choice to love.

I was taking a train. And because it was the peak hour, it was really packed. I was in front of the door, and was trying to keep my balance because there was nothing to hold on to. And along came this auntie – from the back. She squeezed right into that tiny space between me and the door. She wasn’t considerate. Now remember what I said earlier? It’s not about you. So in this case, it’s not about me. Instead of being offended by that auntie’s actions, I think for the auntie. Maybe she is rushing too.

Not everything is about us. So let’s not take offence, and not be easily

angered, but Choose to Love.

We tend to assume that people’s mistakes are due to their personality, instead of considering their situation. Oftentimes, we don’t give people the same grace we give ourselves. But remember our key verse? Jesus said to “Love your neighbour as yourself.”

Referring to 1 Corinthians 13:7, Paul said that love “bears all things, believes all things,

hopes all things, endures all things.” Drawing your attention to the word ‘endures’, its

Greek word /hoo-poh-mo-nei/ ὑπομένει (hypomenei), is a military term. Picture in your head an army holding an important position at all costs – even when faced with enemy assaults, faced with doubts, they will endure.

“Love your neighbour as yourself.” Give grace, and keep believing in the best of people,

like how an army stands firm and endures till the end. You might question, isn’t this toxic? What if I keep believing the best of people, but they use this to their advantage? Well, keep believing, and if you need to, confront them with love. Confrontation does not mean arguing or hurling accusations. It means communicating to the other party, “I still want to believe the best of you”, and giving them your listening ear, and an opportunity for them to explain.

Finally, all these are only possible if we know, not just in our minds but in our hearts, the agape love of God. To choose to love, we must have a close relationship with God, because He is the giver of this agape love.
